Dear Freshman of 2018, Friends, Ladies and Gentlemen,

Good morning and Welcome! To all the professors, happy teachers’ day! Standing here, I feel a bit excited because we are extending our warmest welcome to the freshmen of 2018. This group consists of undergraduates, postgraduates and international programme students who are from 46 different countries and regions of the world. I’d like to offer my heartfelt congratulations to you as BFSU is a very selective university. I hope today will be the beginning of some of the best years of your life.

My young friends, you are embarking on a new journey of your life. After all these years in schools, you have been preparing for this day – the day you start your university education. And as you successfully complete your study here at BFSU in 2, 3 or 4 years, you will become an alumnus of the school. From Freshmen to Alumnus, this period in between means greatly to you because this is the most wonderful age of your life and this should be a life-changing experience. Many times, when I compare the photos of freshmen and graduates, I see the astonishing amount of change and growth, and I witnessed the miracle that’s happened in those who tried their best in achieving the most. If you don’t want to have any regrets at the graduation ceremony in a couple of years, plan your university life well from today. Tomorrow is in your hands and we as university educators are here to help you to achieve what you want to be.

I know you must have many questions in mind. What is BFSU really like? what kind of people I am going to meet? What can I learn at IBS? Take your time and you will find answers by yourselves. University is a journey that you are going to travel through step by step, and let’s begin with some knowledge about your university and your school today.

University is the place for spreading knowledge and pursuing truth. We believe in learning and we are committed to making the world a better place through teaching, learning and research. As you look forward into your future, let’s dream a little about what you might achieve. BFSU is not a big university, but in the past 7 decades, it has turned out tens of thousands of graduates, who are playing key roles in different walks of the society, including senior government officials, diplomats, senior managers，language experts, and intellectuals. It is known as the cradle of diplomats, and it has always been striving to bridge the differences between China and the outside world.

International Business School is the most vigorous school at BFSU. It was born to serve the demand of the society for foreign language talents who are also well trained in economic and management knowledge and skills. After 18 years of development, it is already the biggest and diversified school in BFSU. We are committed to building a multicultural learning environment for bright young people from different parts of the world to meet and study together, to make friends, and to work on the challenges that the world faces now and in the future. We will help you to enrich your knowledge base, to develop your communication skills and to be well equipped with language skills. As an International Business School, we know that we must be open to new ideas and new perspectives and that’s why we are now working with over 80 domestic and international partners, including leading business schools and companies, in order to offer our students a bigger platform to study and a more balanced view towards the world.

Ladies and Gentlemen, to summarize, our school has some simple principles in our education: We wish everyone at IBS feel equally valued; we hope to challenge our students academically so that you can realize your potential; we want to provide cultural, sporting and charitable engagement for our students to enjoy, to grow team-work skills and to develop your sense of social responsibility. These are the value that we wish to offer to you in our education.

Obviously, education involves both teaching and learning. How do you learn at IBS? Here are some suggestions:

No 1. Understand yourself and have a clear aim. You must gain a clear understanding of who you are, what you can and should do and where you wish to go. You will define the place that you want to take in society. Of course, not everyone is born with the same aptitude, but If you are a bird, try to fly as high as possible. If you are fish, try to explore the deep sea. Explore the impossibilities.

No. 2 Follow your passion and be curious because curiosity is the source of passion for the unknown world; Think about those most well-known entrepreneurs, very often, their success started with a simple idea, a social problem that they wish to solve and they keep on trying, driven by their passion and curiosity for a better solution and a better world.

No. 3. Be active, Open your heart, Welcome the diversity, Respect differences and build a harmonious IBS community together. As Confucius once said, “when three men meet together , one of them who is anxious to learn can always learn something of the other two”, please use the community of your fellow students as one of the greatest gift of your time here.

“A journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step”. My fellow students, your university journey now formally starts. During your stay here, we want you to stretch yourself and go beyond what you were yesterday. Make yourself a new person every day. It is totally up to you to decide what you are in the future. All Faculty members, administrators and your fellow students will try their best to help you. Together, let’s make this school a great place to study so that it will enable all of us to be our best selves.
