PhD of Management Science and Engineering

Program Overview

The International Business School (IBS) established the undergraduate major of Information Management and Information System in 2001 and the undergraduate major of E-Commerce in 2002. In 2010, IBS was authorized to award master’s degrees in Management Science and Engineering (MS&E). IBS was accredited to award doctoral degrees in MS&E in 2018, which started to enroll students in 2019. The MS&E PhD program combines the frontier theories of management science with the advantages of language disciplines at BFSU, forming an interdisciplinary and multi-lingual international educational opportunity for talents in management science.

Generally, IBS enrolls PhD candidates through the “Application + Examination” method. In addition, in order to make full use of inter-university advantages in talent cultivation and scientific research and to share resources, the IBS and the Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business (CKGSB) set up a strategic partnership in 2020 to jointly enroll students with a bachelor’s degree who directly move on to pursue a PhD degree (hereinafter referred as the Direct PhD Program).

CKGSB is a well-known business school in China, a member of AACSB (the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) and European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD), and it is accredited by AACSB and EQUIS. Its MBA and EMBA programs have been accredited by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council. CKGSB has more than 40 full-time professors of global renown in terms of research output, educational background, and past teaching and research experience at leading business schools globally. More than half of them previously held tenure or senior professorships at top business schools such as University of Michigan, MIT, Darden School of Business, Wharton, and Yale.

Features of Direct PhD Program:

1. Academic Research:

IBS and CKGSB jointly cultivate PhD candidates in six research directions, including International Logistics and Global Supply Chain Management; Accounting and Finance with AI and Fintech Applications; Big Data and Business Analytics; Data Science and Global Governance; Cross-cultural Management and Communication; and Language and Global Business.

2. Supervisor Group: 

The supervisor group for the PhD program is composed of professors and young teachers with excellent academic performances from IBS and CKGSB. They provide students with comprehensive guidance and support in professional study, academic research, graduation thesis, and degree defense, and cultivate the innovative ability of PhD candidates.　　

3. Curriculum: 

Professors from the IBS and CKGSB will jointly teach cutting-edge courses in relevant fields. In addition, PhD candidates will have full access to academic resources, enterprise practice research, and field research resources at the three CKGSB campuses.

4. Diploma & Certificate: 

Apart from the PhD degree in Management, students can receive the “PhD Program in Management Science and Engineering” course certificate issued by CKGSB and academic recommendation letters from professors.
