G20 Research Center

Founded in 2010, the G-20 Research Center of Beijing Foreign Studies University is based on the primary discipline of regional and global development and the secondary-discipline doctorate degree of international commerce and regional governance in the university. It focuses on regional and country economic research. It is a "National and Regional Research Center for Filing in the Ministry of Education" and a think tank source for "CTTI (China Think Tank Index).

In recent years, the Center has actively integrated resources from the International Business School, the School of English and International Studies, the Japanese Research Center, the Department of German, the School of Asian and African Studies, the School of European Languages, and other faculties of Beijing Foreign Studies University. It gives full play to the advantages of language and focuses on forward-looking research on key issues and major strategic issues concerning the G20. At present, the Center attaches great importance to research on many topics such as China’s impact on the outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) of G20 member countries, transmission paths, investment methods, and regularly holds a rich series of academic activities. It aims to build the research center into a national strategic think tank with salient influence; contribute to further strengthening China's voice and influence in the G20; and provide intellectual support for the government’s diplomacy, economic policies, and the globalization of Chinese enterprises.

For daily operations, the center carries out bi-weekly academic forums and regularly holds academic workshops where foreign experts from the United States, Portugal, Canada etc are invited to give academic lectures. The center’s journal, International Economic Observation, attracts attention from well-known domestic think tanks such as the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and Chong Yang Research Institute of Renmin University of China. The center aspires to serve the country’s needs by jointly building up a cooperative platform of think tank-based research with relevant government departments. At present, the Center has collaborated with the Ministry of Finance and Commerce, China economic net, the government of Hangzhou and Ningbo, and so on. In 2016, the center held the G20 Summit in Hangzhou, China. The center maintains an active collaboration with the Hangzhou government, where a number of seminars and academic exchange activities have been conducted.

Work Plan of the Center:

(l) Track G20 hotspot issues and periodically publish materials in The International Economic Observation　　

Pay close attention to the relevant media at home and abroad; track international hot news and commentary articles; collect information rapidly; produce high-quality excerpts; and publish high-level internal publications.

(2) Carry out G20 special research and publish G20 research reports　　

Focus on important issues in the field of international economics and finance; carry out targeted academic research; and regularly release results to provide intellectual support to the state and the central government.

(3) Establish a website for G20 research and maintain a database of G20　　

Having the multilingual advantages of Beijing Foreign Studies University, the center focuses on the major powers; implement country and region tracking; establishes a comprehensive G20 research website; provides rich academic resources; continues to track the macroeconomic situation; monetary policy, financial reforms, import and export trade of G20 countries and regions; and gradually establishes and improves the national and regional databases.
