Dear Dean Niu, faculty, alumni, and students, I’m honored and more than happy to be with you today on the invitation of IBS. My name is Jimmy Zhu, from class 2003, major in Finance.
First of all, please allow me to briefly introduce myself. like most of you, I was a recommended student from Shenzhen foreign language high school. I was the head of liaison department of BFSU during my study here. My first job after graduation was in CICC. In 2007, I moved to Hong Kong and joined AID partners to work on private entity investment. Till now, it has been 10 years. Two years ago, I left AID and joined Digital Domain. Currently I am the Chief Investment Officer of Digital Domain. From last November to this July, I am the CEO of greater China area for our company.
You might not have heard of Digital Domain but when I mentioned films like Titanic, Fast and Furious, Spider Man and Avengers, you will know that Digital Domain is the VFX magician behind these great movies. The headquarters of our company is in LA. We have five offices in 10 cities. You may think BFSU has nothing to do with movie making as it has no majors related to movies. But as long as you like movies, there are plenty of ways for you to be part of this industry, such as working on movie related investment or being a translator. One of my colleague graduated from English major and he started from being a movie subtitle translator and now he is movie producer.
My speech today is to share with you some of my advice on working and studying. Here they follow.
First, enjoy your college life and make as many friends as possible. Free from parents, able to support myself financially, and surrounded by lots of friends, four years of my college life were the happiest time for me. Here friends could be your classmates, roommates, teachers and people you know outside school. One example I would like to mention is that it was Dean Niu that recommended me to secure the interview opportunity in CICC. And it was the VP I knew from Deutsche Bank to refer me to the interview at AID partners. And now my work partner is a friend from Peking university and the person who handles my finance is my friend from college who is also in charge of a foundation worth 2.5 billion RMB.
Second, study hard but please do not focus only on study. There are two types of student in college that I don’t really appreciate. First type is students who worked so hard in high school before they got accepted to college. Once they are in college, they do nothing but to enjoy their college life, for example they would live on the internet day and night (if not necessary they would not leave the internet even for one second.) The second type is students who carry on the same learning model as that in high school. and they actually want to live in the library. as for me, my college was fun and colorful. My grades were fine and I graduated without any fuzz. I learned something from every extracurricular activity and every volunteer activity.
Third, advice such as not to fail any subject or fall in love once is not my point here today, because you might fall in love in college more than once and generally failing your courses is unlikely. Active participation in extracurricular is encouraged. I spent every summer vocation from year 1 on working for commercial bank, security house, and hedge funds. And at school, I actively participated in all kinds of student activities. Therefore, Dean Niu said I was more mature than my peers.
Next, world is diverse and all roads lead to Rome. Remember last time when I talked to Dean Niu that nowadays colleges students are exposed to multiple choices unlike our generation that all headed to investment bank. I think this is good, because I came to realize with all these years of working that each job is with same potential and the only difference is they are in different stage of development. It might not be a good option to start your career with a million-dollar salary.
In my first draft of this speech there were some advice on work. But I don’t think you can use it right now. So, I summarize all that parts into advice number 5 here that is to work hard and stay focused. Don’t let any opportunity slip through your fingers. When I applied for my first job at CICC, I actually failed the first round of paper exams. But I kept bothering CICCs HR department and they finally gave me an interview opportunity. In the end, I am the only one that got accepted in that class of candidates. When I worked for private equity, it should have been nice and easy, but soon after came the economic crisis. All juniors but I got sacked. I had to work 14-16 hours a day then. Now with current job, I take 140-150 flights a year. No need to be jealous, because if you follow the news, you will see how bad the airline delays are.
My father works in the field of education, so I highly respect education. that is why I kept revising my speech draft. I hope I say something that is useful to you and give you some inspiration.
At last I want to say, dear students, no matter how good you were at high school or how lucky you are to be admitted by BFSU, college is a new starting point for you all. Live the four years to the full and don’t waste any time. As an alumni, I hope sincerely that you are at your happiest moment each time when you talk about your college life just like me.
Dear students, wish you all the best in the next four years here in IBS; dear teachers, wish you a great success in your career and dear IBS, wish you better and better!
Thank you all!
